Start With Intent: Quote, Not Directory Shopping
Searches for “steel companies” or “metal works UAE” pull directories, job seekers and overseas suppliers. A fabrication enquiry should read like a tender clarification:
- Who is asking (main contractor / consultant / owner)
- What structure is required (warehouse, canopy, mezzanine, walkway, shade)
- Where the site is (Dubai plot / free zone / other emirate)
- When steel must arrive and erect
- What documents support the price (drawings, BOQ, specs)

- Or a schedule of lengths / pieces if BOQ is not ready
- Provisional items called out separately
3. Specification Notes
- Steel grade and coating system
- Bolted vs welded preference
- Inspection / NDT requirements if any
- Fire protection or intumescent notes (if in steel package)
4. Site And Programme
- Delivery address and access constraints
- Crane availability (client vs contractor)
- Target fabrication and erection windows
- Occupied building or live warehouse constraints
If you only have a sketch, still send it. A marked PDF with dimensions beats a phone call that lists “about 20 tonnes” with no drawings.
What A Comparable Quotation Must Show
When you open three steel fabrication quotes side by side, force the same columns:
- Supply of steel members — yes / no
- Shop drawings — included / excluded
- Surface treatment — primer only / full paint / galvanise
- Delivery to site — included / excluded
- Erection labour and equipment — included / excluded
- As-builts and material certificates — included / excluded
- Validity period and variation process
The cheapest lump sum often excludes erection, coatings or revision cycles. That is how “savings” become site claims.
